4/26/14:
Martin's Beach Protest

Martins Beach in Half Moon Bay, CA has been closed to the public since 2008 in direct violation of the California Coastal Act. The new owner, a Silicon Valley Venture Capitalist, has ignored repeated requests by the environmental organizations, the Coastal Commission and legislators to reopen the beach that families and surfers have been enjoying for almost 100 years.

Sea Slugs held a "surf sit in" as a form of protest against the beach's closure.

4/12/14:
West Cliff Restoration

Working with the West Cliff Ecosystem Restoration team, Sea Slugs spent their Saturday tearing up the invasive ice plants along the coasts near Natural Bridges State Park and replacing them with native plants.

Thanks again to Helen Christianson!

The 15th annual Earth Summit - an event which promotes sustainability on campus and in the community - invited Sea Slugs to host a booth at this year's convention. Our table included a documentary about Cowell's, photos from previous events and a Meme generator focused on the concept of conserving water!

2/22/14:
Cleaning Up Cowell's

Sea Slugs teamed up with Surfrider Foundation Santa Cruz, Save The Waves, and Tropical Adventures Scuba to clean up Cowell's Beach in honor of the World Surfing Reserve Anniversary.

For four consecutive years, Cowell's has made the Beach Bummer's List, also known as the Dirtiest Beaches List in California. The clean up is the first step of a long term goal to restore Cowell's and remove it from the list.

Mavericks Invitational,
Volunteering with Save the Waves

At this year's Mavericks Invitational, Sea Slugs volunteered with Save the Waves Coalition at their booth promoting the preservation of wave breaks and their respective local environment by designating fantastic surf zones as World Surfing Reserves. Along wtih the spreading the word on preservation and "surfonomics", selling some memberships and cool t-shirts, we got to partake in the big-wave contest and watch the surfers tackle some amazing waves.
